Liquid membrane electrode for selective determination of salicylate in pharmaceutical preparations

Abstract: A salicylate-selective liquid membrane electrode with a nitronsalicylate ion-pair complex in nitrobenzene as the electroactive species is described. At pH 4.5-9.5, the electrode provides a rapid and near-Nernstian response to salicylate ion in the concentration range 10-I-10-4~. The selectivity coefficients obtained for 40 different carboxylate, phenolate and inorganic anions showed that there was negligible interference by most of these ions. In general, the proposed electrode has significantly better perform… Show more

“…An advantage of this electrode is that the anion ClO 4 -, different from what it is observed for the salicylate-sensitive liquid-membrane electrodes 13,14,26 does not interfere in its response. In quantitative studies about equilibria in solution, it is utilized an excess of inert electrolyte, so that the ionic strength of the solution is kept effectively constant during all the time encompassed by the experiments.…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] This fact restringes its utilization due to manipulation difficulty and the mechanical deficiency of this kind of setting up. With the evolution of ion-selective electrodes, in its brief history and development, other kinds of salicylate ion-sensitive electrodes has been described in the literature.…”

“…The selectivity coefficients were determined by the separate solution method 20,21 in 0.05 mol dm -3 magnesium acetate using 1 × 10 -2 mol dm -3 concentration of both the scopolamine and interfering species. The selectivity coefficient was calculated from the following equation:…”

“…The selectivity coefficients were determined by the separate solution method 25,26 in acetate buffer of pH 6.0 using 10 -2 mol l -1 test solutions. Where E1 and E2 are the potential readings observed after 1 min of exposing the sensor to the same concentration of surfactant (aCP) and interference (aj 1/z ) respectively, S is the slope of the calibration graph (mV/concentration decade) and z is the charge of ion j.…”
