Liquid crystal light deflecting devices based on nonuniform anchoring

Abstract: Tunable liquid crystal light deflecting devices based on nonuniform anchoring energy are proposed. These devices have uniform thicknesses of the layers they are composed of, and beam deviation is controlled with a uniform electrical field. Potential applicability of such an approach in beam deflectors and active lenses is investigated. It is shown that the approach is a competitive alternative to liquid crystal light deflecting devices, in which the needed spatial distribution of liquid crystal molecules is ac… Show more

“…For instance, it has been reported recently that the development of LC devices based on nonuniform anchoring energy might be used as tunable light deflecting systems or active lenses. 39 Such a goal could be reach by tuning the density of nanotubes on the substrate during the CVD growth in order to induce a gradient of anchoring energy and of sheet resitivity.…”

“…Despite the apparent simplicity of the methods utilizing inhomogeneous alignment and several projects devoted to this subject [15][16][17][18][19], a set of questions related to the potential of the corresponding LC DOE remains unclear. For example, there is no clear evidence about the extreme characteristics that can be achieved by such kind of LC DOE.…”

“…Implementation of inhomogeneous alignment, in particular inhomogeneous anchoring [15,16] or the pre-tilt angle variation [17][18][19], makes possible to achieve a desired formation of the LC director distribution under a uniform electric field. The corresponding optical element can be controlled through a pair of continoues electrodes and be free of the drawbacks mentioned above.…”
