Liquid Crystal Devices for Beam Steering Applications

Abstract: Liquid crystals are valuable materials for applications in beam steering devices. In this paper, an overview of the use of liquid crystals in the field of adaptive optics specifically for beam steering and lensing devices is presented. The paper introduces the properties of liquid crystals that have made them useful in this field followed by a more detailed discussion of specific liquid crystal devices that act as switchable optical components of refractive and diffractive types. The relative advantages and di… Show more

“…Unlike electronic reconfiguration, the optical technique has constraints for lossy behavior and complex activation mechanisms, while the mechanical technique confronts a slow response [36][37][38][39], but the best are these two tend to perform without require biasing lines. The material change technique exhibits low profile and lighter weight but, unfortunately, had limited application [40,41].…”

“…Liquid crystal (LC) has been widely used in various applications such as tunable lenses [ 5 , 6 ], holographic displays [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], smart glasses [ 10 ], random lasing [ 11 ], and intensity modulators [ 12 ] by taking advantage of a low cost with a relatively simple process, and it has also been used for beam steering as an electro optical modulators [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Among them, nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) have the advantage of a low driving voltage, robust manufacturing process, and a low cost; in particular, the NLCs with a high birefringence are of special interest because they can reduce switching time with a small cell gap [ 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”
