Tabriz, as one of the most earthquake-prone cities in the Iran plateau, has experienced enormous earthquakes that have even destroyed the city altogether. Considering this seismological background and the vicinity of Tabriz's northwestern fault, reducing the possible earthquake losses can be highly useful by scrutinizing the strong ground motion resulting from the fault activation. To this end, a stochastic finite-fault ground motion simulation (EXSIM) method was applied as an important means for predicting the ground motion near the epicenter of the earthquake. EXSIM is an open-source stochastic finite-fault simulation algorithm that generates the time-series of the earthquake's ground motion. Based on the findings, the peak horizontal acceleration reached 0.83 g in the northern parts by creating artificial accelerograms and Tabriz's seismic zonation. In comparison, it reduced by 0.48 g by departing from the fault in the city's southern parts. Additionally, providing a seismic zonation map in Tabriz revealed that stopping the construction in the north parts while extending the settlement construction to the south part of the city are considered vital and unavoidable. Also, by applying the magnification and effects of the soil layers above the bedrock, it was further found that the existence of the loose layer with low strength and compaction intensify the application of seismic acceleration on the near-surface structures in the central, west, and southwest parts of the target area.

Liquefaction is one of the geotechnical earthquake issues when a soil subjected to high strain due to dynamic loading and causes damage of the infrastructure. The main objective of this study is to predict the ground motion parameter and evaluate the potential of soil to liquefaction in Hawassa town. The site was characterized and classified based on the SPT-N values and average shear wave velocity (Vs30). The SPT-N value in Hawassa town ranges from 5-50. Whilst the Vs30 varies from 245-365m/s. The site class was C and D based on the NEHRP (2015) whereas B and C based on the EC8 (2003). The effects of the liquefaction are predicted using equivalent linear response analysis and liquefaction hazard evaluation methods at the five typical sites. Equivalent linear response analysis was used to determine local site effect in terms of PGA (g), SA (g) and maximum strain (%).Whereas the liquefaction hazard evaluations were done by liquefaction susceptibility criteria, factor of safety (FS), liquefaction potential index (LPI), probability of liquefaction (PL) and probability of liquefaction induced ground failure (PG). The predicted ground motion parameter shown: (i) PGA (g) values at surface ranges from 0.16g to 0.27g, (ii) the maximum strain (%) is less than 0.01 and (iii) the SA (g) vary from 0.7g to 1.2g with in the period interval of 0.1se and 1sec. The FS was less than unity for the typical one site and greater than unity for the other typical 4 sites. As a result, the liquefaction will be occurred only at the typical one site than other typical four sites for the given input motion. It is also evident that the typical one site has very high LPI, very likely to the PL and extremely high to PG than the other typical four sites. The findings from the present study will be helpful in retrofitting, analysis, design of structures and solving practical challenges in earthquake engineering.

Article Info Received : 14.07.2016 Accepted : 25.10.2016 This study was performed to relase the soil structure of Uzungöl district of Trabzon city, a vocational area, where had been formed by a historical landslide and lake deposits and to evaluate its geotechnical characters by using seismic methods which are noninvasive, rapidly applicable and provide substantial information about the structure of investigated ground in a short time. For this purpose, seismic refraction, active-passive surface waves and seismic reflections in 16 profiles were gathered on four sub-areas and and evaluated by current favorable numerical methods. Although it considerably varies between profiles, the depth of basement, depositional base of deposits, was averagely obtained as 13.5-15m at upper elevation and 25-50m at lower elevation of the study area. Dynamic elastic parameters and average shear wave velocity of the upper 30m (VS30) of soil in the area were calculated. The soil classification of study area was interpreted as locally Z1 and Z2 class for TEC, B and C class for EC-8 code, C and D class for NERHP. According to VS30 (394-530m/s), ground amplification and predominant vibration period of the study area are respectively obtained as 1.5-2.1 and 0.23-0.30sec. On the other hand, all deposits are characterized by stiffness-solid soil, excluding arable soil from surface to a few meters depth. In addition, the first meters of bedrock shows weathered character, but deeper parts are very compact and hard. Therefore, a scientific infrastructure has been formed to carry out the engineering projects to be planned for Uzungöl settletment safely and without damaging the environment.
