Lipid profile abnormalities associated with endocrine disorders

Abstract: low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG). However, we also shed light on the influence of endocrine disorders on relatively new cardiovascular markers, such as apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]. Apo B is the primary apolipoprotein of atherogenic lipoproteins, including very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), Lp(a), intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Apo B … Show more

“…It is known that in patients with acromegaly, the inhibition of the activity of lipoprotein lipase and lecithin–cholesterol acyltransferase under the influence of GH and insulin resistance results in an increase in triglycerides and a decrease in the HDL fraction [ 39 ]. IGF-1 enhances the uptake of free fatty acids by adipose tissue and the liver and induces lipogenesis.…”

“…This is due to the high concentration of GH and the dysfunction of the visceral adipose tissue, which leads to insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance. Treatment of acromegaly leads to an increase in body fat and a decrease in lean body mass within a few months of GH normalization [37,38] It is known that in patients with acromegaly, the inhibition of the activity of lipoprotein lipase and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase under the influence of GH and insulin resistance results in an increase in triglycerides and a decrease in the HDL fraction [39]. “…Data on dyslipidaemia in CS is limited. Usually raised triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, and reduced HDL cholesterol are observed ( 8 , 37 ). However, abnormal lipid panel might result from obesity alone ( 38 ).…”

“…Lipid profile alterations associated with endocrine disorders are generally unfavorable and proatherogenic. Even though in some conditions, e.g., overt hyperthyroidism, a decrease in deleterious lipoproteins like low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is seen, it cannot be viewed as unequivocally positive since the disease itself is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk ( 5 ). The problem of dyslipoproteinemia in endocrinological conditions is immense and would require a very long review.…”
