Lipid peroxidation in rats treated with vincristine sulphate and nandrolone decanoate

Abstract: Brain and serum lipid peroxidation was studied in rats treated with vincristine sulphate and different doses of nandrolone decanoate. Thirty rats were distributed into six groups (n=5). The treatments were applied once a week for two weeks. Sample collection was performed in the third week. Treatments during the first week were: G1 (control) -physiologic solution, G2-vincristine sulphate (4mg/m 2 ), G3-physiologic solution, G4-physiologic solution, G5-vincristine sulphate (4mg/m 2 ), and G6-vincristine sulphat… Show more

“…Although saffron treatments can protect the liver against vincristine sulfate, the mechanism in which saffron extracts improve these abnormalities is not well clear. Recent evidence has indicated that overproduction of free radicals and oxidative stress is one of the significant mechanisms in which vincristine sulfate causes tissue injuries (Martins et al, 2011). Inhibition of oxidative stress (OS) induced by vincristine sulfate and reactive oxygen species (ROS) seem to be one of the mechanisms by which saffron extract improves liver injury.…”

“…In addition, vincristine is capable of interfering with vascular blood flow and inducing cell necrosis 22 . However, vincristine has been reported to be highly toxic to other non-neoplastic tissues and cause respiratory failure, neuromuscular, cardiac and gastrointestinal toxicities 23 . Signs of hepatotoxicity, including significantly high levels of hepatic transaminase, centrilobular hemorrhagic necrosis, and histological and ultrastructural changes have been observed in patients or animal models treated with vincristine 24 .…”

“…Although the molecular mechanisms of neurotoxicity induced by chemotherapy have not yet been fully elucidated, studies have shown an increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and increased lipid peroxidation in the brain tissue of rats exposed to VCR. Thus indicating an association between chemotherapy and increased oxidative stress, which may lead to a reduction of the viability of the neurons [6,7]. In this sense, therapies that positively modulate the antioxidant system may be important tools in the treatment of various diseases and toxicities that affect nerve system.…”
