Lipid peroxidation in cord blood at birth: the effect of labour

Abstract: Objective To determine the effect of labour on free oxygen radical activity in the fetus, as reflected Design Prospective, observational study. SettingMethods by lipid peroxide levels in umbilical cord arterial blood.Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.Umbilical cord arterial and venous blood samples were collected from singleton term infants delivered by elective caesarean section. Base excess, PO,, pC0, and pH were measured in both samples and compared to identify do… Show more

“…This is consistent with the previous findings that high levels of free oxygen radical activity are a function of the labour process and that there is no increase in lipid peroxidation levels in the cord blood of fetuses delivered by LSCS (22). However, maternal oxidative stress levels were higher as indicated by increased MDA and pmteolytic activity.…”

“…The decidua vera was dissected by Shah et al 33 from the delivered placenta, whereas our decidual biopsies were obtained by suction from the uterine wall after placental removal. Our samples were obtained at cesarean section before labor had commenced, avoiding unpredictable oxidative stress resulting from various lengths and intensities of labor 34 and thereby a possible effect on the test results. In decidua, renin expression was Ͼ10-fold higher than in placenta, irrespective of preeclampsia.…”

“…Other authors found that spontaneous delivery caused the increase of LPX products levels in plasma of newborns in comparison to those delivered by caesarean section (Rogers et al 1998). According to some authors, TBARS could be used as a more sensitive indicator of foetal tissues injury caused by perinatal hypoxia than ABB parameters (Wang et al 1996;Rogers et al 1999).…”

“…Wang et al (1996) reported association between MDA levels and acid-base balance (ABB) parameters in umbilical cord blood, which reflected foetal tissue injury at birth. Moreover, according to Rogers et al (1998), TBARS might be a more sensitive indicator of foetal hypoxia than ABB parameters in umbilical cord blood.…”
