Lipid Oxidation in Fresh and Spray-Dried Eggs Enriched with ω3 and ω6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids During Storage as Affected by Dietary Vitamin E and Canthaxanthin Supplementation

Abstract: A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment was planned to study the influence of dietary fat source (linseed oil or sunflower oil) and dietary doses of alpha-tocopheryl acetate (alpha-TA) (0 or 200 mg/kg of feed) and canthaxanthin (CX) (0 or 5 mg/kg of feed) on fatty acid (FA) composition and lipid oxidation of fresh and spray-dried eggs. Dietary supplementation with alpha-TA and CX modified the levels of certain long-chain polyunsaturated FA (PUFA). Lipid oxidation in fresh eggs and spray-dried eggs at 0, 6, and 12 mo … Show more

“…Similarly, Qi & Sim (1998) and Galobart et al (2001), using diets containing between 0 and 800 mg of vitamin E/kg of feed, did not verify significant differences on eggshell weight. As counterpart, Pita et al (2004) supplemented diets of laying hens with 0, 100 and 200 UI of vitamin E and observed eggshell weight significantly higher than the eggs from the group that did not receive supplementation.…”

“…The C group values were correlated with dietary supplementation of D-L-α-tocopheryl acetate (Gebert et al, 1998;Meluzzi et al, 2000;Franchini et al, 2002); hens have the capacity to transfer α-tocopherol from feed to the egg which has a strong antioxidant effect (Cherian et al, 1996a(Cherian et al, , 1996bGalobart et al, 2001aGalobart et al, , 2001b.…”

“…The secondary oxidation product, malondialdehyde (MDA), was measured according the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method described by Botsoglou et al (1994) using third derivative spectrophotometry (UVvisible S2100, Scinco, Korea) with some modifications suggested with Galobart et al (2001a). Tetraethoxypropane (1,1,3,3-Tetraethoxy propane, T9889, 97%, Sigma, St. Louis, MO 63103) was used as MDA precursor in the standard curve.…”
