Coronavirus disease 2019 is a worldwide pandemic resulting in a severe acute respiratory syndrome. Remdesivir is the only FDA-approved drug for hospitalized patients older than age 12. It shows the necessity of finding new therapeutic strategies. Functional foods (FFs) could have co-therapeutic and protective effects against COVID-19 infection. Traditional Persian medicine (TPM), one of the safest and most popular schools of medicine for hundreds of years, has recommended potential FF candidates to manage such a global pandemic. To reveal the potential of TPM in terms of antitussive FFs, traditional Persian pharmacopoeia “Qarabadin-e-Salehi” was searched using the keywords “Soaal” and “Sorfeh.” Also, a search of MEDLINE, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and Science Direct was performed for the relevant literature published from the inception up to March 2021. A combination of search terms including “cough, antitussive, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antiviral, COVID-19, mucoactive, mucolytic, expectorant, and mucoregulatory” was also applied. The potential mechanism of action in SARS-CoV-2 infection was discussed. Twelve TPM FFs were found including Laooqs, Morabbas, a Saviq, a soup, and a syrup. They are combinations of two to seven ingredients. Natural compounds of mentioned formulations have the main pharmacological mechanisms including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihistamine, bronchodilator, immunomodulatory, and mucoactive effects as well as central or peripheral antitussive activities. FFs are cost-effective, easily accessible, and safe options for both treatment and prevention of COVID-19. They might have positive psychological effects along with their pharmacological effects and nutritional virtues. They could also manage persistent respiratory discomforts after recovery from COVID-19.

Работ по культуре льна крупноцветкового (Linum grandiflorum Desf.) in vitro крайне мало и в них преимущественно рассматривается морфогенез, получение эмбриокультуры, резистентность клеточных линий. L. grandiflorum относится к декоративным культурам, подвергающимся воздействию разнообразных стрессовых факторов в условиях города. К их числу относятся поллютанты и гербициды, вызывающие окислительный стресс в растениях. Выполненное нами исследование впервые показывает различия в реакции in vitro культивируемых клеток льна крупноцветкового на действие двух стрессовых факторов-тяжелого металла кадмия и пестицида глифосата (по морфофизиологическим характеристикам и биосинтезу фенольных соединений). Целью работы была оценка ростовой активности каллусной культуры льна крупноцветкового и накопления в ней фенольных соединений, в том числе фенилпропаноидов и флавоноидов, при воздействии токсических агентов. Каллусные культуры выращивали на питательной среде Мурасиге-Скуга с добавлением 2 % сахарозы и 2 мг/л 2,4-дихлорфеноксиуксусной кислоты. Чтобы оценить влияние стрессоров, в основную питательную среду добавляли кадмий Cd(NO 3) 2 (60 мкМ), глифосат (10 мкМ) или кадмий и глифосат одновременно (в тех же концентрациях). Контролем служила обычная питательная среда. Каллусные культуры анализировали в конце пассажа (28-е сут культивирования). Учитывали интенсивность роста каллусов и их морфофизиологические характеристики. Содержание воды в каллусных тканях определяли стандартным методом после высушивания до постоянной массы в термостате при температуре 70 С. Фенольные соединения извлекали 96 % этанолом из замороженного жидким азотом растительного материала при 196 С. Содержание суммы растворимых фенольных соединений определяли с реактивом Фолина-Дениса, флавоноидов-с 1 % раствором AlCl 3 при  = 725 нм и  = 415 нм. Количество фенилпропаноидов оценивали методом прямой спектрофотометрии экстрактов при  = 330 нм. Для изучения состава фенольного комплекса каллусных культур льна применяли метод тонкослойной хроматографии на пластинках целлюлозы, растворитель БУВ (н-бутанол + уксусная кислота + вода в соотношении 40:12:28). Каллус L. grandiflorum имел рыхлую консистенцию, желтоватозеленоватый цвет, невысокий индекс роста (к концу пассажа 150 %) и высокую оводненность (95-97 %). По мере его роста содержание суммы фенольных соединений и фенилпропаноидов (биогенетически ранних полифенолов) возрастало (к концу пассажа в 2,7 раза). Количество флавоноидов, одних из наиболее распространенных представителей фенольного метаболизма, в первой половине цикла культивирования повышалось (в 2,25 раза), а к концу пассажа незначительно снижалось. В условиях действия кадмия на поверхности каллусных культур отмечалось формирование некротизированных клеток, окрашенных в темный цвет, что не было характерно для варианта с глифосатом. Биосинтетическая способность каллусных культур при действии кадмия не изменялась.
