Links and Trade-Offs between Fisheries and Environmental Protection in Relation to the Sustainable Development Goals in Thailand

Abstract: The fisheries sector significantly contributes to global food security, nutrition, and livelihood of people. Its importance for economic benefits, healthy diets, and nutrition, and achieving sustainable food systems is highlighted by several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), i.e., SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). However, due to unprecedented population levels, the contribution of the fisheries sector to fulfills these roles is challenging, particularly given addition… Show more

“…Nevertheless, T. tambroides has gained much interest as a high-value food fish and ornamental fish among the Thai people [ 59 , 61 , 62 ]. This has accelerated the exploitation of wild fish both as broodstock for aquaculture and a premium supply for the ornamental fish market [ 63 ]. Moreover, habitat alteration (e.g., damming or deforestation) and deterioration have been additional threats to these valuable species [ 64 ].…”

“…Thailand’s fisheries have developed substantially over the last decades and contributed to the progress of the SDGs in Thailand via supplying nutritious food and generating economic growth [ 64 ]. Based on the DoF’s databases from 1995 to 2015, the estimated total aquaculture production (in both marine and freshwater areas) in Thailand has gradually grown from 0.6 Mt in 1995 to 0.9 Mt in 2015.…”

“…Different most concerned fishes can also be found between two research categories, in which trout and whitefish have been more frequently used as keywords in lakes-related publications while pike perch and tilapia have been of great concern in reservoirs-related publications. Also noteworthy is that, besides eutrophication, a lack of scientific concern has been paid to the negative impacts of fisheries and aquaculture on the ecosystems of lakes and reservoirs, such as reduced biodiversity, increasing alien species invasion, and degraded mangrove forests (Sampantamit et al 2020). Eutrophication and water quality are two major research subjects for policy development of lakes while reservoir researchers have targeted optimization and simulation subjects in reservoir policy development.…”
