Linking Zinc and Leptin in Chronic Kidney Disease: Future Directions

Abstract: Anorexia is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with the development of malnutrition and an increased risk of mortality. Several compounds are linked to anorexia in these patients; however, the mechanisms are unknown. Zinc (Zn) deficiency is associated with decreased food intake and has been observed in CKD patients. In addition, leptin is an anorexigenic peptide, and patients with CKD present generally high levels of this hormone. Studies have suggested an ass… Show more

“…Additionally, Zn affects the secretion of leptin [ 160 ]. Zn deficiency increases the level of leptin in patients [ 161 ], which affects the appetite of patients, and may lead to anorexia [ 162 ]. Zn supplementation can improve taste abnormalities of dialysis patients [ 163 ], and increase dietary intake and weight of patients [ 164 ].…”

“…Some patients reported they neglected their health because, aware or not of their problem, they minimized comorbidities, not meeting the guidelines or even denying the warning that the situation was serious and that it could worsen: I did not take high blood pressure The most common gastrointestinal manifestations are nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dysphagia (12) . Some complain about a metallic taste and have ammonia breath odor that can be caused by zinc deficiency and metabolic disorders (13) . Cardiovascular and lung symptoms, with their consequences, especially on fluid overload, dyspnea and edema, were remarkable: ...My feet were always swollen, I urinated less and less, until there was no more urine, I had high blood pressure... “…According to previous studies, zinc supplementation has a controversial effect on serum leptin levels. Zinc is connected to insulin signaling and in some situations like obesity and end-stage renal disease [24][25][26][27][28]. So far, zinc has been widely studied for its therapeutic and preventive features and its association with serum leptin level is investigated in several studies.…”
