Linking verbal and non‐verbal representations: Computer analysis of referential activity

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop a computer assisted procedure to model the Referencial Activity scales as scored by raters. Referential Activity is defined as the function of connecting non-verbal experience with language. Using a large text corpus that had been rated by experienced and reliable judges, extreme samples from both ends of the Referential Activity Scales were selected. “…As it happens, in addition to the extent of narration, theory and research suggest another way to evaluate the relationship between narration and avoidance. When people relate their personal episodic memories in temporal order, they also tend to use specific, concrete and imagistic language as they retrieve sensory and emotional memories from that time [15,32]. Police and other forensic investigators have also long known that encouraging witnesses to retell events chronologically is the best way of activating episodic memory details for a past event [33], and conversely that a vague, nonchronological account may indicate avoidance.…”

“…As mentioned above, the crucial characteristic of visions is their representation as mental image. Future studies could therefore compare visions and goals regarding the degree of concreteness and imagery by using content-coding (Bucci & KabasakalianMcKay, 1992) or computer-based analyses (Mergenthaler & Bucci, 1999).…”
