PurposeSpare Parts Management (SPM) and Industry 4.0 has proven their importance. However, employment of Industry 4.0 solutions for SPM is at emerging stage. To address the issue, this article is aimed toward a systematic literature review on SPM in Industry 4.0 era and identification of research gaps in the field with prospects.Design/methodology/approachResearch articles were reviewed and analyzed through a content-based analysis using four step process model. The proposed framework consists of five categories such as Inventory Management, Types of Spares, Circularity based on 6Rs, Performance Indicators and Strategic and Operational. Based on these categories, a total of 118 research articles published between 1998 and 2022 were reviewed.FindingsThe technological solutions of Industry 4.0 concepts have provided numerous opportunities for SPM. Industry 4.0 hi-tech solutions can enhance agility, operational efficiency, quality of product and service, customer satisfaction, sustainability and profitability.Research limitations/implicationsThe review of articles provides an integrated framework which recognizes implementation issues and challenges in the field. The proposed framework will support academia and practitioners toward implementation of technological solutions of Industry 4.0 in SPM. Implementation of Industry 4.0 in SPM may help in improving the triple bottom line aspect of sustainability which can make significant contribution to academia, practitioners and society.Originality/valueThe examination uncovered a scarcity of research in the intersection of SPM and Industry 4.0 concepts, suggesting a significant opportunity for additional investigative efforts.

Managing supplementary parts for plants and machines plays a major role in accomplishing the needed system availability in a cost-effective manner. Today's industrial demands require mature technology that is strong in terms of capital and bulk-production oriented. However, the idleness of these machines and equipment due to unavailability of spare parts is a major problem and barrier to effective systems availability. This study aims to develop an effective manufacturing strategy for spare parts. A case study was conducted at a General Water Desalination Establishment in Saudi Arabia to select the right strategy to reduce the total downtime and total maintenance costs of equipment. The results showed the importance of creating a production plan that suits an organization's ability to manage the supply chain for customers and ensure the company remains competitive within its market. Identification of critical spare parts of equipment for maintenance operations is one of the key decision-making activities to obtain lower downtime for equipment and inventory costs. Therefore, decision-makers should apply the best method and use accurate criteria to analyze and rank the spare parts based on criticality. The strategies proposed in the present study assure that these important parts are available for maintenance and repair of the plant and machinery when required at an optimum cost.

Spare parts are key operational assets in order to minimize the unexpected equipment downtimes that may significantly impact the company results.Accordingly, the spare parts supply chain network supports the entire spare parts operations and it is essential to achieve the planned goals. However, traditional literature on spare parts management has not focused on the underlying supply chain network. Thus, this paper studies the integration of supply chain network design and control with traditional spare parts management. In particular, this paper proposes a generic network optimization modelling structure, with simultaneous decisions for warehouse locations and inventory control, allowing to optimize the total costs of the spare parts supply chain network. The generic model is specified based on three inventory control policies widely used in industrial sites, i.e. (s, Q), (R, s, S) and (S-1, S), which are suitable for managing a great variety of spare parts. Furthermore, a decomposition-based solution approach is also proposed based on generalized Benders decomposition. Finally, numerical results obtained from a real-world case of application on the process industry are shown and discussed.
