This study proposes a new metabolic urban model based on the fact that the city has its own ecosystem. The aim of this study is to reveal a new metabolic approach due to urban change. Feedback is important for more effective results in managing urban dynamics and processes in a heavily anthropic setting. In this model, urban actors and dynamics are considered as an important source of feedback in urban planning and decision processes. With the addition of the governance dimension to the urban metabolic model, a new management model was created including the needs and expectations of local groups. In this article, a new urban metabolic model has been developed for conceptual modeling for urban sustainability.

SummaryFood consumption is a local activity related to environmental impacts at different scales. Yet, the link between eating food as a social and cultural practice and the global implications of food consumption has not been sufficiently explored. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach to relate social practices with the biophysical flows of food products at the household level. Focusing on middle-class households in Metro Manila, the Philippines, we conduct qualitative interviews to highlight preferences, habits, and perceptions about food consumption. In parallel, we collect quantitative information on food purchased. We relate our results to national trends by analyzing the recent evolution of national food expenditures. Finally, we review environmental impacts related to main food categories. Our research points to the significance of socioeconomic factors on food consumption, notably the presence of domestic help or the professional situation of household members. One main finding is the identification of eating out as an important and growing trend in Asian cities, which causes a shift of resource consumption and related environmental impacts from the household to the service sector.

Urban areas are hot spots of complex and dynamic interactions between society and ecosystems. Studies on such areas, however, have partially captured the coupled socio-ecological nature of urban environments. To address this gap, we examine the ways natural and social scientists have defined, developed and implemented research on urban environments. We discuss how these literatures set the foundation and explicitly advance urban studies through the lens of urban socio-ecological systems. By bringing these literatures together we forge a common ground between scholarly communities and foster cross-fertilization between researchers working on cities. A better understanding of the commonalities and differences of these disciplines in approaching urban environments is the first step toward opening corridors for new lines of discussions that better encompass the role played by urban socio-ecological systems in shaping changes and long-term sustainability.
