Linear body measurements of cattle before and after 20 years of selection for postweaning gain when fed two different diets2

Abstract: At weaning and again after postweaning gain tests, height and width at hips, height at withers, body length, girth, head length and width, muzzle width, and cannon bone circumference measurements were obtained from Angus and Hereford bulls and heifers born in 1964, 1984, and 1985 (n = 989). The cattle were from the initial and final two calf crops selected for postweaning gain when fed either a high-concentrate diet or an all-hay diet. Analysis of variance and canonical discriminant analysis were used to exami… Show more

“…Growth traits of two-year-old QC cattle, including body height, height at hip cross, body length, chest girth, chest width, chest depth, rump length, hucklebone width, hip width, and body weight, were collected for association analysis. They were collected according to the measurement of Gilbert et al 1993.…”

“…For the association study, a total of 171 NY and JX cows were recorded for growth traits, including BW recorded at birth, after 6 (weaning), 12, 18 and 24 months, body length, heart girth, hip height, hipbone width and average daily weight gain for four different growth periods (6, 12, 18 and 24 months). These traits were measured using previously described methods (Gilbert et al, 1993).…”

“…Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples using standard procedures (Sambrook et al, 2002). Five traits were measured, including body weight (BW), chest depth (CD), chest circumference (CC), back fat thickness (BT), and rib-eye area (REA) (Gilbert et al, 1993;Rincon et al, 2009). …”
