“…Previous therapeutic trials have shown that the tetracyclines and erythromycin are effective in the treatment of NGU (34,35), while lincomycin (36) and the penicillins (11,37,38) are not. These results are consistent with either chlamydia or ureaplasma etiology, since both C. trachomatis and U. urealyticum are high susceptible to tetracycline and erythromycin but are relatively resistant to the penicillins and lincomycin (17,18,39,40) in vitro.…”

“…The evidence supporting T-mycoplasmas as a major cause of non-specific urethritis consists of their high isolation rate of above 60 per cent. in most studies, and their sensitivity to tetracycline and erythromycin (Shepard, Lunceford, and Baker, 1966), but resistance to lincomycin (Csonka and Spitzer, 1969) which accords with the response of the disease to these antibiotics. The present report concerns the isolation of a T-mycoplasma highly resistant to tetracycline, in a patient whose urethritis was unaffected by the antibiotic.…”

“…On three other penicillin control plates, both M. hominis and T-strain colonies Received for publication August 22, 1969 T T T T T T T T 0 0 T T T T T T T T T M. hominis in 32-0 per cent., and the two organisms were found in the same specimens in 27 0 per cent. (Csonka, 1969). The incorporation of lincomycin is shown to inhibit the growth of M. hominis without affecting that of T-strains, and this improves the chances of recognizing the small colonies and often sparse growth of T-strains in mixed cultures.…”

“…Shipley, Bowman, and O'Connor (1968) and our own group found independently that T-strains were resistant in vitro to high concentrations of lincomycin. Csonka and Spitzer (1969) observed that lincomycin had little or no effect in non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and that after a course of this antibiotic, T-strains persisted in the urethral discharge whilst M. hominis disappeared.…”
