Limb Asymmetries in Landing and Jumping 2 Years Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Abstract: Female athletes who have undergone ACLR and returned to sport may continue to demonstrate biomechanical limb asymmetries 2 years or more after reconstruction that can be identified during landing.

“…[8][9][10] Considerably less research has investigated bilateral force production asymmetry and the majority examined previously injured populations. [11][12] Yoshioka et al 20 assessed bilateral strength asymmetry in a computer simulation model, and their results indicated that jump height was not affected by strength asymmetry and that the stronger leg possibly compensated for the weaker leg. If this was assessed on human subjects, the compensation of the stronger side may not be adequate to make up for the weaker side and the results may be different.…”

“…1,7,19 Another consequence of the 2011 NFL Lockout may be an increase in relative reinjury risk during early sports reintegration, due to greater residual biomechanical and neuromuscular deficits from prior injuries or surgeries sustained in previous years. 3,8,18,20 The "release for full activity" is a potentially sensitive landmark for the athlete who has a strong desire to return to immediate high-level sports participation. 12 During standard NFL preseason rehabilitation, the sports medicine team and strength and conditioning staff work together with the athlete to bridge the potential gap between the athletes' perceived versus actual sports readiness.…”

“…Symmetry is assumed in bilateral VJ landings and therefore seldom assessed or reported in the literature except when related to injury [32]. In order to determine the typical levels of symmetry in a bilateral landing, where the two limbs should theoretically contribute equally, considering the bilateral nature of the movement, we used ND participants to indicate asymmetry tolerance levels.…”
