Light transmission through bubble swarms

Abstract: In these calculations, we assumed the virial equation of 2 ' = 1 + BP, where B = ylB11 + y2B22 + tjly2812 state (18) (19) for the vapor phase, and UL = x 1 q L + x& for the liquid phase. The P-x data were correlated with polynomials or spline fits as shown in Table 1. I n each of the four cases, convergence was sensitive to the value of p k (the convergence parameter) and to the nature of the P-x equation chosen to fit the data. However, after several trials, each case was satisfactorily solved. The results … Show more

“…Until recently, the use of light transmission has been limited to the detection of particle size in dispersions and to the measurement of interfacial area in liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersions [7][8][9]. The theory for the light transmission through these systems has been developed by a number of investigators.…”

“…The use of the attenuation of β-rays to determine the average void fraction has also been the subject of several studies. [17][18][19] However, due to the strong absorption of this type of radiation, its use has been limited to vacuum systems with very thin duct walls. It is obvious that to satisfy safety requirements, the use of any kind of nuclear and X-ray radiation techniques necessitates heavy protection shielding.…”

“…19 Microwaves have been also proposed to determine gas density and void fractions in organic fluids. [20][21][22] These particular applications are based on the shift of the resonant frequency of a gas-liquid mixture placed inside a cavity which is a function of the dielectric properties of the medium.…”

“…Later, a distinction was drawn between cases involving negligible multiple scattering and others in which this was substantial and indeed predominant. In the former investigations (McLaughlin & Rushton 1973, Curl 1974, Sridhar & Potter 1978, Lockett & Safekourdi 1977 exponential light attenuation functions were used while the latter had recourse either to linear functions (Lockett & Safekourdi 1977) or exponentials with correction terms (Landau et al 1977, AI Taweel et al 1984).…”
