Light quality modulates metabolic synchronization over the diel phases of crassulacean acid metabolism

Abstract: SummaryBesides the acknowledged roles of red light, blue light is a key determinant for synchronizing the metabolic and physiological components of CAM over the day/night cycle.

“…Refinement of CAM may take the form of improving secondary metabolic processes or genomic characteristics that allow for strong and constitutive CAM to exist. For example, fine tuning of carbohydrate turnover is necessary for CAM function (Borland et al, 2016; Ceusters et al, 2014). Experiments placing Mesembryanthemum crystallinum in CO 2 -free air at night resulted in a dampened CAM cycle (Dodd et al, 2003) and comparative RNA-seq in facultative CAM and C 3 /CAM comparisons has shown increased reliance on carbohydrate breakdown as CAM function increases (Brilhaus et al, 2016; Heyduk et al, 2018a).…”

“…Various stimuli can lead to stomatal closure, but stomatal opening is predominately evoked by means of wavelength-responsive mechanisms 27 . The regulatory mechanism of stomatal opening by blue light has been well studied in a number of C 3 plants 28,29 , but its role is less clear in CAM plants 30 light-induced switch from C 3 to CAM in Clusia minor 31 . In the present study, we observed a light-induced gene expression profile for a blue/UV-A light-absorbing cryptochrome 2 (CRY2) (Aam348626) that has been implicated in inhibition of hypocotyl elongation, regulation of flowering time and entrainment of the circadian clock 32 .…”

“…PEPC activity can be regulated according to a circadian clock and modulated according to environmental stresses [58,59]. The regulatory gene expression can be influenced by several environmental parameters, including the level of salinity, the light intensity at the different wave bands [60], and the temperature. As a results of the specific features of PEPCs, CAM plants are very plastic organisms, as they finely regulate the amplitude of malic acid change and the amount of day versus night CO 2 fixation in relation to the peculiar combination of internal conditions and environmental factors [46].…”
