An extensive study of GeV light-ion-induced multifragmentation and its possible interpretation in terms of a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition has been performed with the Indiana Silicon Sphere (ISiS) 4π detector array. Measurements were performed with 5-15 GeV/c p, p, and π − beams incident on 197 Au and 2-5 GeV 3 He incident on nat Ag and 197 Au targets. Both the reaction dynamics and the subsequent decay of the heavy residues have been explored. The data provide evidence Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 10 March 2018for a dramatic change in the reaction observables near an excitation energy of E*/A = 4-5 MeV per residue nucleon. In this region, fragment multiplicities and energy spectra indicate emission from an expanded/dilute source on a very short time scale (20-50 fm/c). These properties, along with caloric curve and scaling-law behavior, yield a pattern that is consistent with a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition.

Thirteen targets with mass numbers from 58 to 238 were irradiated with the antiproton beam from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring facility at CERN leading to the formation of antiprotonic atoms of these heavy elements. The antiproton capture at the end of atomic cascade results in the production of more or less excited residual nuclei. The targets were selected with the criterion that both reaction products with one nucleon less than the proton and neutron number of the target are radioactive. The yield of these radioactive products after stopped-antiproton annihilation was determined using gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques. This yield is related to the proton and neutron density in the target nucleus at radial distance corresponding to the antiproton annihilation site. The experimental data clearly indicate the existence of a neutron rich nuclear periphery, a "neutron halo", strongly correlated with the target neutron separation energy Bn, and observed for targets with Bn < 10 MeV. For two target nuclei, 106 Cd and 144 Sm, with larger neutron binding energies a proton rich nuclear periphery was observed. Most of the experimental data are in reasonable agreement with calculations based on current antiproton-nucleus and pion-nucleus interaction potentials and on nuclear densities deduced with the help of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. This approach was, however, unable to account for the 106 Cd and 144 Sm results.

Recent progress and new challenges in isospin physics with heavy-ion reactions

The ultimate goal of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion reactions with neutron-rich, stable and/or radioactive nuclei is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, particularly the isospin-dependent term in the equation of state, i.e., the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade, and significant progress has been achieved both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, a number of phenomena or observables have been identified as sensitive probes to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental studies have confirmed some of these interesting isospin-dependent effects and allowed us to constrain relatively stringently the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities. The impacts of this constrained density dependence of the symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars have also been studied, and they were found to be very useful for the astrophysical community. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, the study of isospin physics is expected to remain one of the forefront research areas in nuclear physics.
