Light induced electropolymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) on niobium oxide

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe photoelectrochemical polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), PEDOT, was successfully realized on anodic film grown to 50 V on magnetron sputtered niobium. Photocurrent Spectroscopy was employed to study the optical properties of Nb/Nb 2 O 5 /PEDOT/electrolyte interface in a large range of potential, and to get an estimate of the band gap and flat band potential of both the oxide and the polymer. Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to study the morphology of PEDOT. Both the opti… Show more

“…2c and is deeply discussed in Ref. 16. By polarizing the oxide/PEDOT/solution interface under cathodic potential, a dedoping process is reported to occur with the reduction of the polymer, accompanied by a transition from metallic to a p-type semiconducting material.…”

“…Later the concept was extended to other SCs and CPs; thus assemblies such as CdS/PPy [201], CdS/PMT [202], GaAs/PMT [203,204], GaAs/PVP [205], and CuInS 2 /PPy [206] have been realized. Subsequently hybrids based on flat oxide SCs, initially TiO 2 /PPy [207,208], ZnO/PPy [209], and more recently Nb 2 O 5 [210], [211], WO 3 [137] based composites were also obtained. In these methods, photoelectrochemical polymerization occurs at the irradiated SC/electrolyte interface.…”

“…The control of the circulated charge allowed an estimation of the polymer's thickness of about 200 nm. 7 In order to obtain a semiconducting polymer, a reduction step, consisting in de-doping the PEDOT, was foreseen before testing the transistor effect of the whole junction. Taking into account the potential drop in the oxides, a strong cathodic polarization (-3 V vs. Ag/AgCl in 0.1 M LiClO 4 in Propylene Carbonate) was necessary to obtain a p-type PEDOT.…”
