Light effects in the atomic-motion-induced Ramsey narrowing of dark resonances in wall-coated cells

Abstract: We report on light shift and broadening in the atomic-motion-induced Ramsey narrowing of dark resonances prepared in alkali-metal vapors contained in wall-coated cells without buffer gas. The atomic-motion-induced Ramsey narrowing is due to the free motion of the polarized atomic spins in and out of the optical interaction region before spin relaxation. As a consequence of this effect, we observe a narrowing of the dark resonance linewidth as well as a reduction of the ground states' light shift when the volum… Show more

“…Measured temperature coefficient of 1.5 x 10 -10 K -1 (comparable to the values found in literature [29,30]) and intensity light shift coefficients below 1.6x10 -12 /% are promising for competitive chip-scale and miniaturized clocks. The limitations for a high-performance clock using wall-coated cells were studied in [30].…”

“…The free motion of the polarized atomic spins in and out of the optical interaction region before spin relaxation induces a well-known Ramsey narrowing of the CPT resonance, well studied and described in paraffin-coated cells. 52,53 Additionally, it has to be noted that in our experiments, the residual Doppler effect on the clock transition is reduced by a Dicke-type narrowing because the cell characteristic length (1.5 cm) is smaller than the Cs atom ground-state microwave wavelength (3.2 cm). We investigated in Cs-OTS cells the CPT resonance lineshape for different beam diameters.…”

“…The Ramsey interrogation can be realized either with an atomic (or molecular) beam passing through two spatially separated fields, or with a pulsed electromagnetic field (see [2] and references therein). The effect of atomic-motion induced Ramsey narrowing of Coherent Copulation Trapping (CPT) resonance has been studied both experimentally and theoretically in buffered and coated cells, see [3][4][5][6][7][8] and references therein. The signature of this effect is the spectral narrowing of the dark resonance due to motion of oriented atomic spin in-and-out of the optical interaction region, see Figure 1 (a).…”
