Characterization of Cs vapor cell coated with octadecyltrichlorosilane using coherent population trapping spectroscopy

Abstract: We report the realization and characterization using coherent population trapping (CPT) spectroscopy of an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-coated centimeter-scale Cs vapor cell. The dual-structure of the resonance lineshape, with presence of a narrow structure line at the top of a Doppler-broadened structure, is clearly observed. The linewidth of the narrow resonance is compared to the linewidth of an evacuated Cs cell and of a buffer gas Cs cell of similar size. The Cs-OTS adsorption energy is measured to be (… Show more

“…The results show no sign of permanent magnetic moment on the Au NPs—the obtained resonance width is 33.5 times narrower compared to the EIT from uncoated cell. In fact, the resonance is of the same order of magnitude as one of the most established coatings—Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) 55 . Moreover, our results are in agreement with several reports in the literature 5658 stating that the weak N-Au bond in amines-capped Au NPs does not lead to the creation of unpaired spins; the experiments therein detected no permanent magnetic moments.…”

“…93,106 However, here, again adsorption and desorption models do not agree well with coating experiments. 90,113 Therefore, as summarized in a recent review, 114 "there is no specific conclusion about interaction between coating and alkali-metal atoms" even if good results are obtained with the use of chains of alkanes (such as paraffin 105 that unfortunately works with a maximum operating temperature of 80 ○ C), of alkenes, 84 or of organochlorosilanes [such as octadecyltrichlorosilane: OTS (with Ea = 0.42 eV 115 ) that works only up to 170 ○ C 116 but to 350 ○ C with special methods 115 ]. Coating the inside of a collimating tube with such materials thus represents a very promising route toward a bright-wall Cs oven but is experimentally non-trivial and was beyond the scope of this study.…”

“…Therefore, power broadening, transverse laser intensity distribution, and transit-time effects of the thermal atoms become the major factors, as we demonstrate in the following. In addition, wall collisions are still present which deplete ground-state coherence [39]. Figure 4(a) shows a series of spectra of the magnetic-field-insensitive EIT resonance vs coupler-laser intensity at B = 6 Gauss.…”
