Light and scanning electron microscopic studies of the angioarchitecture of intrinsic muscle fibers of the anterior rat tongue.

Abstract: Histological and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characteristics of the microvasculature of muscle fibers in the anterior third of the adult rat tongue are described. For light microscopy, the specimens were embedded in paraffin and frontal sections were stained with Picro-Sirius. Thick sections were obtained from Spurr embedded samples and stained with toluidine blue solution. For SEM, specimens were obtained by the corrosion cast method and fractured specimens in dimethyl sulfoxide were observed with high… Show more

“…The data revealed that externally the muscular fiber is coated by collagen fibers that constitute the endomysium such as described by Morita et al (1991); Nishimura et al (1994); and Motoyama and Watanabe (2001). According to our results, the disposition of collagen fibers around each muscular fiber is characterized by fibrils similar to data showed by MacConnachie et al (1964) and Ohtani (1988).…”

“…The technique of vascular casting followed by corrosion associated with analyses in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) described by Verli et al (2006) has been used in the study of the vasculature of the muscles in the tongue of Wistar rats (Motoyama and Watanabe 2001) and of the dorsal surface of the tongue in different animals (Kishi et al 1990;Kraether Neto 2005;Lopes et al 2002;Matsukawa and Okada 1994;Makiyama et al 1998a,b;Ojima et al 1996b;Ojima 2001;Selliseth and Selvig 1993) and humans (Yu et al 1992).…”
