Lifetimes of thens1np62S1/2states of singly ionized argon, krypton and xenon

Abstract: The lifetimes of the ns1 np6 2S1/2 states of Ar II, Kr II and Xe II were determined by measuring the fluorescence decay curves after selective excitation with pulsed monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The lifetimes are Ar = (4.684±0.019) ns, Kr = (30.78±0.17) ns, and Xe = (35.93±0.20) ns. Calculations performed within the configuration interaction approach show the strong dependence of the calculated lifetimes on the configuration interaction. It is proposed to use the precise lifetime values for a test … Show more

“…The reliability of their data was confirmed by recent B-spline calculations of . The oscillator strengths for Kr II were derived from the selective pulsed monochromatized synchrotron radiation experiment of Lauer et al (1999), where lifetimes of the 4s4p 6 2 S 1/2 states were measured. For the Kr VI line, we list data from MCHF relativistic calculations of Pagan et al (1996), where adjustments were made to the electrostatic parameters in order to improve theoretical level energies and gf -values.…”

“…Indeed, in VUV spectra taken by one of us (HODR) and Dr. Persson at the University of Lund, the experimental intensities were inconsistent with the measurements of Boyce, used by Hansen-Persson in their work about the spectrum of Xe II. Because of this, we indicates the theoretical values of the ratio 5s5p 6 − 2 P 3/2 /5s5p 6 [18]. The LSF value obtained by Hansen and Persson is 32.1 ns; using the same set of configurations, the ab initio value resulted in 21 ns.…”

“…Our work is, in part, an attempt to give an answer to this discrepancy. On the other hand, the lifetime for the 5s5p 6 2 S 1/2 was measured very recently by Lauer et al [18] using synchrotron radiation; also theoretical calculations using a CI method were carried out. Their value and the one by Rosenberg et al [19] correspond between them within the limit of twice the quoted experimental uncertainties.…”

“…At the equilibrium Kr-Kr distance (R eq Kr 2 = 4.0Å [20]), the collective decay width reaches 1.9 meV for triplet and 2.0 meV for singlet doubly ionized states, which corresponds to life times around 300 fs. The predicted life time is five orders of magnitude shorter than the one of the radiative decay [21] which means that the process is not suppressed by photon emission. The enhancement of the singlet width around R = 4.9Å is due to the interaction with the singlet PES of the (4s −1 , 4p −1 )Kr 2+ Kr type.…”
