Life Time Cancer Risk Evaluation Due to Inhalation of Radon Gas in Dwellings of Al-Diwaniyah Governorate, Iraq

Abstract: Radon is a radioactive natural gas that tends to concentrate in indoor homes and has major health consequences, the most serious of which is the ability to cause lung cancer. This research involves measuring indoor radon concentrations in different types of homes (non-smokers and smokers) in Al-Diwaniyah, Iraq, as well as assessing radon concentrations in cigarette samples acquired from Iraqi markets. nuclear track detectors were used to measure radiological parameters to determine annual effective dose levels… Show more

“…Solid nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) a particular kind of polymer, are electrically insulating substances that may store the effects of ionizing radiation in them for a long time and manifest as dense fibrosis tracks [5,6]. Due to their low cost, simplicity of use, accessibility, availability, durability, and effectiveness, the SSNTDs are widely used in plasticizers and highly regarded in many fields, including charged particle detection, geology, geophysics, neutron monitoring, space science, cosmic rays, nuclear physics, nuclear reactors, geology, and geophysics [7,8,9]. Soil is main compound to grow the agriculture and it is important to humans and their health.…”

“…Radon measurements are important since the radiation dosage to the human population from radon and its daughter accounts for more than half of the overall exposure from natural sources [3,4].The 222 Rn isotope is considered the most significant because of its relatively lengthy half-life than other radon isotopes. It decays into a sequence of short-lived daughters, including polonium 218 Po and polonium 214 Po, with energy of alpha particles of (6.003 MeV) and (7.68 MeV), respectively [5,6]. Track detectors (CR-39) register alpha particles released by radon gas and its offspring as tracks, which may be seen under an optical microscope after chemical etching [7].…”
