Life quality of patients who underwent breast reconstruction after prophylactic mastectomy: systematic review

Abstract: While overall satisfaction with cosmetic results was high, most women were not satisfied with the softness of the reconstructed breasts, and had problems with breast hardness, numbness and sex. Therefore, it is very important to inform the patients about the complications that may develop after the operation, while there is not enough data about the importance of informing the patients before the operation.

“…The nipple is the most sensitive part of the breast and as nipple stimulation is a key element of the erotic experience that heightens arousal for many women, the total loss of breast sensation for many women can be devastating, despite reconstruction yielding positive visual results. Because reconstructed nipples are numb, they do not respond to hot/cold or to touch [76]. Women who undergo reconstruction with implants also may find that the implants feel unnatural, heavy, or uncomfortable.…”
