“…Also, needbased dynamics have been studied in an increasing number of diverse populations. To illustrate, need-based dynamics now appear critical for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities (Frielink et al 2019), for the engagement and productivity of crew members in a long-term mars simulation flight (Goemaere et al 2019) and for senior adults' adjustment who face the challenge of achieving ego-integrity (Custers et al 2012).…”

“…Understanding psychological needs become especially important for long-duration spaceflight, especially for a mission to Mars, as the crew will not have access to most of the current ISS mitigation strategies (i.e., real-time conversations with family, viewing Earth, etc.). One of the mission objectives of HI-SEAS IV was to evaluate the self-determination theory in order to better understand how astronauts will react to the presence, or lack of thereof, of certain psychological needs 90 . The three areas of focus of the study were autonomy, competency, and relatedness 90 .…”

The three areas of focus of the study were autonomy, competency, and relatedness 90 . The study found that the crew members who were more satisfied in the autonomy, competency, and relatedness tended to perform better individually, but also with others 90 .…”

“…Since the development of the BPNSFS, research has taken a great step towards measuring needs. Several studies have been conducted to translate and validate this scale in different languages and domains, namely: (a) in the general domain, Dutch [16], German [17], Hebrew [18], Italian [19], Japanese [20], Portuguese [21], and Spanish [22,23]; in the physical education domain, Persian, Dutch, and Estonian [24][25][26]; (c) in training settings, Dutch and English [27]; (d) in the sports context [28,29]; (e) physical exercise in gym and health clubs [30]; (f) as well as in other domains, such as work [31] and space travel [32]. All of the aforementioned studies supported the factorial validity of the BPNSFS, which means that this measure is a reliable source of needs assessment and thus applicable in different cultures and contexts [2].…”
