Life History, Non-Specificity, and Revision of the Genus Chorioptes, a Parasitic Mite of Herbivores

Abstract: Chorioptic mange mites have been reared in vitro on epidermal debris. The life history of the mite has been observed, and each stage in the cycle described. Mites from the cow, horse, goat, sheep, and llama have been shown to be identical biologically and morphologically, and the specific names of equi, caprae, and ovis have been synonymized with C. bovis. The in vitro life cycle has been completed on epidermal debris from a variety of wild Cervidae, Bovidae, and Equidae, as well as on material from several br… Show more

“…texanus isolated from the Holstein cattle from Korea in this report was morphologically identical to C. texanus reported by Sweatman [2] except for the shape of the propodosomal plates of adult female and adult male mites. Contrary to the pointed propodosomal plate posteriorly described by Sweatman, the length and width of the propodosomal plate of C. texanus isolated from the Holstein cattle from Korea was similar.…”

“…Seta numbering according to Sweatman [3]. Bar = 50 μ m. A B of C. bovis reported by Shibata et al [9] and Sweatman [2], the length and width of the propodosomal plate of all developmental stages in this report were similar in length which measured 82.1 × 80.3 μ m in adult female and 58.3 × 61.5 μ m in adult male (Table 1). Furthermore, while Sweatman [2] recorded that the propodosomal plate of adult male was often pointed posteriorly, such features was not observed in C. texanus in this report.…”

“…Two species are currently recognised: Chorioptes bovis which infests the skin surface of cattle, sheep, horses, goats and rabbits (Scott 1988, Wall andShearer 1997) and the rarer Chorioptes texanus, which has been isolated from the ears of goats in Texas (Sweatman 1957).…”

“…Acaroptes occurs on wombats (Womersley 1953), and Petauralges on other marsupials (Domrow 19886). Chorioptes and Psoroptes ovis infest various domestic animals, but the latter (sheep scab) has been eradicated from Australian flocks (Sweatman 1957(Sweatman , 1958bSeddon 1964). The distressing symptoms, to the point of epileptiform spasms, of Otodectes and P. cuniculi, the ear-canker mites, are likewise well known (Sweatman 1958~;Littlejohn 1968).…”
