Life Cycle Assessment of LPG Engines for Small Fishing Vessels and the Applications of Bio LPG Fuel in Korea

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the environmental impact of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in small fishing vessels by conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA) in Korea. For the first time in the country, LPG engines designed for small fishing ships were utilized in this study. In addition, this research examined the potential benefits of employing Bio LPG, a renewable LPG produced from two distinct raw materials (crude palm oil (CPO) and refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) palm oil), instead of conventi… Show more

“…Having a density 1.5-2 times the air's density, LPG will easily spread and diffuse in air creating a larger flammable cloud which could get worse when encountering an ignitor. The concept of BLEVE was first conceptualized by Smith of the National Fire Protection Association which stated that when the liquid's temperature exceeds its boiling point at atmospheric pressure, the liquid-holding vessel immediately ruptures into two or more pieces [17][18][19][20].…”

“…Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is also considered an alternative to conventional marine fuels due to its high energy density and clean burning properties [20]. According to Yeo et al [21], LPG is suitable for small to medium-sized domestic ships, such as fishing vessels.…”

“…From an economic point of view, the LCCA results showed that hydrogen is the most expensive option for the trawler, while the most cost-efficient option is the use of methanol as an alternative fuel. Kim et al [20] analysed LPG and bio-LPG compared to conventional marine fuels for fishing vessels. The performed LCA indicated that LPG results in 30% lower GHG emissions than diesel-powered fishing vessels, while bio-LPG can reduce GHGs by over 65%.…”
