Life cycle assessment of algae‐to‐biodiesel shallow pond production systems in the Mediterranean: influence of species, pond type, by(co)‐product valorisation and electricity mix

Abstract: The environmental sustainability of microalgae‐to‐biodiesel production systems was examined at open (outdoor) and closed (indoor, using artificial light and temperature control) raceway ponds in a Mediterranean climate (southern Greece). Spirulina platensis and Nannochloropsis sp. species were considered, with the latter having a slightly better environmental performance. In terms of energy efficiency, large cumulative energy demand (CED) values were observed, while the energy return‐on‐investment (EROI) ratio… Show more

“…For this reason, in order to reach endpoint, ReCiPe converts and aggregates midpoint impact categories into three damage categories, i.e. i) damage to human health, ii) damage to ecosystem diversity, and iii) damage to resource availability, which can be further aggregated into a single score and allow a more effective communication of the results, even to nonspecialised audiences [33]. The unit of measurement for ReCiPe single score results is the Eco-indicator Point (Pt), where 1000 Pt is the annual environmental load of an average…”
