Life cycle assessment for a solar energy system based on reuse components for developing countries

Abstract: In many developing countries, the lack of electricity in rural areas is still a key issue for millions of people. The reuse of discarded components in renewable energy systems, based on the frugal innovation concept, has been identified as a solution for rural electrification in countries where renewable resource is plentiful. Specific emphasis is paid in this work to the application of reuse from an engineering viewpoint for a Renewable Energy System, including a "solar" element, composed of solar Photovoltai… Show more

“…Despite the growing importance of the SE as an alternative means for consumption, studies are still at an embryonic stage ( Kim et al., 2019 ). The SE is a growing research topic in various disciplines, however ( Sainaghi et al., 2020 ), and the media have reported the problems of customers, service providers, and the SE firms resulting from the Covid-19 ( Zheng et al., 2020 ).…”

“…[8] In the line of this work, the power stack and the V 2 O 5 electrolyte stored in tanks can be scaled against each other in a (simplified) linear way. The VRLA is based on inputs from literature, [55,78,79] wherein the module housing and racks are based on information withdrawn from the study by Alotto et al [58] When battery modules have to be exchanged due to insufficient lifetime (as described in the previous section), it is assumed that all modules are exchanged considering again their increased performance (cycle lifetime). More information about the different used LCIs is provided in the Supporting Information.…”
