In the energy supply and conversion system proposed herein, the following energy demands were considered for a hospital: electricity, sanitary hot water, steam, and cooling. A superstructure representing all options of equipment and energy resources was built, with conventional equipment as well as more complex technologies, such as absorption chillers and cogeneration modules. Two renewable energy resources were available: solar photovoltaic energy and biomass (sugarcane bagasse). The solution of a mathematical model based on mixed integer linear programming provided the optimal economic solution, constituted by the configuration of the system (equipment installed) and its operation strategy (how to operate each equipment, throughout one operational year). The objective function considered the minimisation of total annual costs, which encompassed fixed costs (equipment) and variable costs (maintenance and energy costs). A reference system was designed, where only conventional equipment was utilised (no cogeneration, no solar or biomass utilities available). The optimal economic solution included the utilisation of biomass to produce hot water and steam, with an annual cost that was 11% lower than the reference solution. Although the economic optimal solution did not install cogeneration modules, it took advantage of solar and biomass resources to achieve annual minimum cost.

In the quest for a better use of energy resources, energy integration and cogeneration strategies have been employed in the industrial and commercial sectors with considerable benefits realized. However, the residential sector remains underexplored. An optimization procedure should be carried out whenever there is a need to ensure or verify the economic viability of an energy system. This study uses Mixed Integer Linear Programming to optimize the energy supply to a residential building, with 20 floors and 40 apartments, located in the city of Jo?o Pessoa (Northeast Brazil). The equipment available includes gas engines, electric and natural gas boilers, heat exchangers, cooling towers, and absorption and mechanical chillers. The optimization establishes the optimal system configuration and operational strategy (operation throughout the year). Economic, technical, and legal aspects were considered in the minimization of the total annual costs associated with the building?s energy supply. The energy demands were calculated on an hourly basis, throughout one year, by the EnergyPlus software and corresponded to hot water (83 MWh/year), electricity (171 MWh/year) and cooling (242 MWh/year) demands. The optimal system was entirely reliant on the electric grid to meet the electricity demand directly and to satisfy heating and cooling demands by means of an electric hot water boiler and a mechanical chiller. The optimal solution is tested by varying, within reasonable limits, selected parameters: natural gas and electricity tariffs, the behavior of residents, amortization factor and relationship between the tariffs of electricity and natural gas.

Exergoeconomic Assessment of a Compact Electricity-Cooling Cogeneration Unit

This study applies the SPecific Exergy COsting (SPECO) methodology for the exergoeconomic assessment of a compact electricity-cooling cogeneration system. The system utilizes the exhaust gases from a 126 hp Otto-cycle internal combustion engine (ICE) to drive a 5 RT ammonia–water absorption refrigeration unit. Exergy destruction is higher in the ICE (67.88%), followed by the steam generator (14.46%). Considering the cost of destroyed exergy plus total cost rate of equipment, the highest values are found in the ICE, followed by the steam generator. Analysis of relative cost differences and exergoeconomic factors indicate that improvements should focus on the steam generator, evaporator, and absorber. The cost rate of the fuel consumed by the combustion engine is 12.84 USD/h, at a specific exergy cost of 25.76 USD/GJ. The engine produces power at a cost rate of 10.52 USD/h and specific exergy cost of 64.14 USD/GJ. Cooling refers to the chilled water from the evaporator at a cost rate of 0.85 USD/h and specific exergy cost of 84.74 USD/GJ. This study expands the knowledge base regarding the exergoeconomic assessment of compact combined cooling and power systems.
