Lichen planus pemphigoides: its relationship to bullous pemphigoid

Abstract: Clinical and immunopathological studies of three patients with lichen planus pemphigoides (LPP) were carried out to investigate the relationship between LPP and bullous pemphigoid (BP) and to determine whether the antigen in LPP is the classical BP antigen. LPP is usually considered to be the coexistence of lichen planus with BP. The bullae in LPP were subepidermal and indistinguishable from BP. Indirect immunofluorescence demonstrated antibody binding to the epidermal surface of 1 M NaCl-split skin and mucosa… Show more

“…Here, band-like deposits of C3 along the basal membrane and of immunoglobulins along the junction zone can be observed in lichen planus pemphigoides. Almost always the autoantibodies are targeted against the NC16A-domain of the hemidesmosomal protein BP180 [46,68].…”

“…Clinical features, histopathology and immunofl uorescence of lichen planus pemphigoides display fi ndings of LP as well as bullous pemphigoid [46]. In lichen planus pemphigoides the blisters develop not only on pre-existing LP lesions as is typical for bullous lichen planus, but also on unaltered skin [47].…”

“…Im Gegensatz zum klassischen Lichen ruber findet sich in der direkten Immunfluoreszenz beim Lichen ruber pemphigoides stets eine bandförmige Ablagerung von Komplement C3 entlang der Basalmembran, meist auch die von Immunglobulinen (häufig IgG) entlang der Junktionszone [6]. Bei 40 ± 50 % der Patienten sind auch zirkulierende Antikörper gegen die Basalmembranzone nachweisbar.…”
