Lichen picker's dermatitis (Cladonia alpestris (L) Rab.)

Abstract: The frequency and immunological background of dermatitis occurring in lichen pickers during the 3- to 4-month picking season were studied in a small community in northern Finland. Thirty of 164 lichen pickers had suffered from dermatitis at least on the fingers and the dorsa of their hands, and many of them also had dermatitis on their forearms, faces, etc. Fifteen of them were subjected to epicutaneous and photo-epicutaneous testing with crushed Cladonia alpestris (L.) Rab. and some fractions of it. Allergic … Show more

“…Moreover, in their previous work, the authors stated that application of usnic acid (up to 50%) to healthy individuals, without previous contact dermatitis, caused no primary skin irritation (Mitchell and Armitage 1965). Opposite results were described by Salo et al (1981), in a study of lichen pickers, who reacted to both usnic acid enantiomers. This observation was in agreement with the study of Hausen et al (1993), on the sensitizing potency of both usnic acid forms on the guinea pigs by a modified FCA (Freund's complete adjuvant).…”

“… 4 Another group of workers prone to occupational dermatitis are the ‘lichen pickers’ who harvest Cladonia stellaris which is used in Christmas decorations, flower arrangements, toy trees in model railway layouts and other products. 5 Non‐occupational contact with lichens includes carrying firewood, children climbing trees or arranging Christmas decorations made from lichens.…”

“…Irradiation of patch tests to lichens and their extracts may elicit enhanced responses [264][265][266][267].An airborne contact dermatitis simulating photodermatitis has also been suggested to contribute to the clinical features seen in patients with lichen allergy [46]. Immediate-type allergies with asthma and urticaria were described following inhalation of, or direct contact with, algae from lichens [268].…”
