Li26 Clusters in the Compound Li13Na29Ba19

Abstract: A star is born: The Li26 cluster in the new intermetallic phase Li13Na29Ba19 can be described on the basis of a tetrahedral star (left) or four interpenetrating centered icosahedra (right). The M26 cluster is known from γ‐brass and was predicted to be stable for Li in the gas phase. Li13Na29Ba19 contains the first example of a homoatomic M26 cluster in the solid state.

“…Metal-rich nitrides based on barium in combination with sodium have grown into a family of compounds unified by a common structural principle of ionic BaϪN bonding in cluster-like subnetworks complemented by metallic bonding between the clusters involving sodium atoms, with no direct NaϪN contacts [1]. Use of lithium in Ba subnitride synthesis changed the situation radically: Li atoms have been shown not only to participate in metallic-like bonding to barium atoms as in intermetallic phases BaLi 4 , [2,3], Ba 19 Li 44 [4], Li 13 Na 29 Ba 19 [5], and in a new subnitride Li-Ba 3 N [6] but also in direct LiϪN bonding as in LiBa 2 N [6] and Li 80 Ba 39 N 9 [7]. The crystal structure of the latter compound is especially instructive: both Li and Ba atoms play the metallic (bonded only to other metal atoms) and the ionic (bonded to nitrogen atoms as well) roles.…”
