“…Although LCTs were not described within this spectrum, the finding of associated anomalies in nonneoplastic testicular parenchyma adjacent to these tumours could help to understand their pathogenesis. There are only a few studies in which the parenchyma adjacent to LCTs is mentioned (Kim et al, 1985;Allen & van Vollenhoven, 1993;Ho et al, 1994;Hekimgil et al, 2001). Here, we provide a detailed study of the nontumoural parenchyma of 16 LCT cases in order to address their possible pathogenic mechanisms.…”

“…Although the pathogenesis of LCTs is unknown, their association with other primary testicular abnormalities may be relevant to improve our understanding of their development. The occurrence of LCT in cryptorchid testes (Deshmukh, 1982;Kim et al, 1985;Allen & van Vollenhoven, 1993;Kirsch et al, 1993;Safak et al, 1994;Calleja et al, 1999), as well as its association with germ cell neoplasms (Fink et al, 1984;Dieckmann & Loy, 1993;Heidenreich et al, 1997), have been reported in the literature, and could point towards a common pre-disposing factor. Our group recently reported a number of findings in the testicular parenchyma adjacent to germ cell tumours (Nistal et al, 2006), which, in addition to the previously reported features (Petersen et al, 1998;Hoei-Hansen et al, 2003), support an association between these neoplasms and other primary testicular lesions.…”

“…There are ≈300 reported cases of Leydig cell tumour; ≈3% were bilateral and endocrinological signs were present in ≈20%. Two case reports associate cryptorchidism with Leydig cell tumours; Sufak et al [1] reported a patient with bilateral Leydig cell tumour in association with a unilateral undescended testicle and another report described bilateral intra‐abdominal testicles presenting with gynaecomastia caused by an endocrine‐secreting unilateral Leydig cell tumour [2]. The only certain mode of differentiation between benign and malignant potential is the presence or absence of metastases that are highly resistant to both radio‐ and chemotherapy.…”

“…These tumors are associated with increased production of androgens or estrogens, resulting in a wide variety of hormonal manifestations, such as gynecomastia, precocious puberty, and decreased libido. [1][2][3][4] In approximately 40% of cases, patients have testicular swelling, which may or may not be associated with a palpable mass. In addition, endocrinopathy is found in about 30% of cases.…”

“…5 Sonography is an important tool in evaluation of the scrotum, and an increasing number of benign and incidental lesions are being reported. [5][6][7] There are, however, scant references to the sonographic appearance of LCTs in the literature, 1,3,[8][9][10][11][12] and the tumor is described as having a variable appearance, indistinguishable from germ cell tumors. 4 This retrospective study was undertaken to analyze the gray scale and color Doppler sonographic features of 10 LCTs.…”
