Leveraging Intelligent Compaction and Thermal Profiling Technologies to Improve Asphalt Pavement Construction Quality: A Case Study

Abstract: Intelligent compaction (IC) is an emerging technology with rollers equipped with global navigation satellite system (GNSS), an accelerometer-based measurement system, and an onboard color-coded display for real-time monitoring and compaction control. Paver-mounted thermal profiling (PMTP) is used to monitor asphalt surface temperatures behind a paver with a thermal scanner, and to track paver speeds, stops, and stop durations. Leveraging both IC and PMTP technologies allows for paving and compaction controls i… Show more

“…Thermographic inspection of pavement systems is a relatively new technique that is becoming increasingly popular. A few of the primary applications include evaluating thermal segregation in newly compacted asphalt pavements, inspecting bridge systems, and assessing delamination in concrete pavements ( 12 , 13 ). The technology has proven to be effective at detecting surface defects and anomalies that could well be signs of underlying structural issues.…”

“…Navigation relies on the advanced positioning technology of bulldozers. In recent years, Chang [10] adopted a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), accelerometer, and thermal scanner installed on the roller and paver measurement instruments for collecting the construction-process information of location, thickness, temperature and other information to achieve the quality control of asphalt concrete paving. With the help of these measurement instruments, Chang reduced the influence of artificial factors and improved the accuracy of the paving quality control.…”

“…The use of IC technologies integrates measurements, documentation, and controls to allow for real-time tracking of roller passes and roller speed, measuring the surface temperature of the pavement material as it is being placed, and adjusting the frequency of the vibrations used to pave. The accelerometer system provides an IC measurement value (ICMV), which is a measure of stiffness for the placed and compacted materials ( 13 ). IC has the capabilities to provide more uniform material compaction, and improved operational efficiency as it reduces the number of passes needed.…”

“…The benefits in using both IC and PMTP together allows for real-time compaction control and monitoring and provides information for making any needed adjustments. This process allows operators to monitor and review the uniformity and consistency of the paving material laydown temperature ( 13 ). Laydown temperature is important to paving as high temperature differentials between the paved layers results in lower pavement density, which can reduce the pavement life span ( 16 ).…”
