Leveraging Communicating UAVs for Emergency Vehicle Guidance in Urban Areas

Abstract: The response time to emergency situations in urban areas is considered as a crucial key in limiting material damage or even saving human lives. Thanks to their "bird's eye view" and their flexible mobility, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be a promising candidate for several vital applications. Under these perspectives, we investigate the use of communicating UAVs to detect any incident on the road, provide rescue teams with their exact locations, and plot the fastest path to intervene, while considering t… Show more

“…Oubbati et al [58] proposed RPUBN routing protocol for UAV-based backbone networks to assist emergency ground vehicles in the urban areas. In RPUBN, the deployed UAVs collect the information about the road condition by exchanging beacon messages with the ground vehicles and try to find out any road accidents and hazards by calculating the mobility of the vehicles on the road.…”

“…In fact, mobility has been frequently responsible for damaging the data delivery and causing significant packet losses and transmission delay [116]. The energy constraint of UAVs also causes UAV failures, which could disrupt the overall network [117]. Both maintenance of the connectivity and reducing energy consumption allow providing a certain degree of reliability and a predefined threshold of QoS [118].…”
