Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Big Data to Optimize COVID-19 Clinical Public Health and Vaccination Roll-Out Strategies in Africa

Abstract: COVID-19 is imposing massive health, social and economic costs. While many developed countries have started vaccinating, most African nations are waiting for vaccine stocks to be allocated and are using clinical public health (CPH) strategies to control the pandemic. The emergence of variants of concern (VOC), unequal access to the vaccine supply and locally specific logistical and vaccine delivery parameters, add complexity to national CPH strategies and amplify the urgent need for effective CPH policies. Big… Show more

“…The information and intelligent management of public health events is a major trend in future emergency management research of public health emergencies ( 1 , 65 ). It is worth noting that the research on the application of digital technology in the vaccination and vaccination of new coronavirus is also a hot spot for research ( 72 ). In addition, based on the cluster analysis of literature, four core journal clusters of digital technology in emergency management of public health emergencies were summarized.…”

“…This is the argument that access to AI tooling and AI skills should be expanded [14,70,83,181]-with the corollary claim that it is problematic that only certain institutions, nations, or individuals have access to the ability to build these systems [8]. A recent example of democratization efforts was the global push for the relaxation of oversight in data sharing in order to allow for more innovation in AI tool development in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic [11,49,122,137,196]. The goal of such efforts was to empower a wider range of non-AI domain experts to participate in AI tool development.…”

“…With the increase in volumes of data so grows the complexity of information that needs to be extracted from the data. Where classical analytical techniques are unable to cope with the volume and complexity, machine learning and big data tools can be leveraged to better harness data resulting from multiple data sources 20 21…”
