Levels of serum sclerostin, metabolic parameters, and periodontitis in postmenopausal women with diabetes

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease defined by hyperglycemia, which is associated with periodontal disease and exerts an effect on bone metabolism. The aim of this study was to determine serum levels of sclerostin in postmenopausal women with diabetes and determine a possible association with periodontal disease. Sixty-one postmenopausal women (32 with diabetes and 29 without diabetes) were evaluated. Blood was collected for biochemical analysis and the determination of serum sclerostin. The particip… Show more

“…Another analysis of serum osteocalcin levels and periodontal parameters in 73 post‐menopausal women also found no association between the measures (Bullon et al, 2005). Also, a connection between sclerostin and periodontitis, as suggested by our data, could not be verified in a study including 61 post‐menopausal women (Pinho et al, 2017).…”

“…Twenty-two full-text publications were thoroughly reviewed independently based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this systematic review, and six studies were excluded. Among the reasons for exclusion were the inclusion of non-systemically healthy patients in two studies, 39,40 the use of a different sample (saliva) in a study 41 and the presence of a test (periodontitis) group only in the remainder of the studies. [41][42][43][44] Therefore, 16 publications were included in the qualitative synthesis.…”
