Kuenen & Swellengrebel29, em 1913, evi denciaram que indivíduos portadores de infec ção amebiana assintomática apresentavam na luz intestinal trofozoítos de E. histolytica de tamanho pequeno fagocitando apenas bactérias e detritos, a seguir encistando-se e sendo elim i nados sem provocar danos.Ao lado desta "form a m inuta" da E. histoly tica, Hoare27 relaciona a chamada "form a magna" da E. histolytica, de tamanho maior, invasora dos tecidos, podendo fagocitar hemá-cias e incapaz de encistar-se, representando uma fase de virulência do parasita que ocorre nos casos de amebíase aguda.Uma outra ameba, descrita em 1912 por Prowazek46 com o nome de Entamoeba hart manni, tem morfologia semelhante à "form a m inuta" da E. histolytica, sendo, entretanto, ainda de tamanho menor.
