“…These researchers found that individuals with a strong family orientation consumed alcohol less frequently and reported consuming fewer drinks in a row than did adolescents with a weak family orientation. Additionally, Brook, Whiteman, Gordon, Nomura, and Brook (1986) reported in a longitudinal study of more than 300 high school students that maternal rejection was related to the initiation of alcohol use. In a similar vein, Vicary and Lerner (1986) found in a longitudinal study of 133 young persons (10 through 19 years of age) that maternal rejection was related significantly to children's later initiation of use of alcohol and marijuana.…”

Undergraduates' conflictual independence, adjustment, and alcohol use: The importance of the mother-student relationship

This study investigated conflictual independence from parents (defined as a relationship free of anger and resentment), adjustment, and alcohol use among college students at a midwestern technical university (N = 109). Results showed that adjustment, as measured by the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (1989), was associated with having achieved conflictual independence from one's parents as measured by Hoffman's (1984) Psychological Separation Inventory. Additionally, greater alcohol use was associated with having achieved less conflictual independence from parents; the most frequent and strongest relationships occurred with respect to the mother‐student relationship. The results suggested that the parent‐student relationship has an impact on late adolescent development and that it also may play a role in alcohol use by college students.

Auf dem Weg zu einer neuen Josquin-Ausgabe? Edward Lowinsky und die Josquin-Festival-Konferenz 1971 1 Die Internationale Josquin-Festival-Konferenz 1971 an der Juilliard School in New York markierte wohl den Höhepunkt der Forschung zur Musik der Renaissance in den Vereinigten Staaten. An fünf Tagen im Juni präsentierten Wissenschaftler*innen aus den USA und Europa wichtige neue Forschungsergebnisse über eine der bekanntesten musikalischen Persönlichkeiten der Alten Musik, vier Ensembles gaben vor ausverkauftem Haus und einem enthusiastischen Publikum Konzerte mit Josquins Musik, und in Roundtable-Diskussionen wurden zentrale Fragen der Josquin-Forschung erörtert. Fünfzig Jahre später führt eine Beschäftigung mit dieser Konferenz unweigerlich zu einer Diskussion über den vielleicht umstrittensten Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Renaissancemusik im 20. Jahrhundert, Edward Lowinsky (Abb. 1). Mehr als alle anderen Faktoren hat Lowinskys Arbeit über Josquin des Prez, deren Höhepunkt die Planung der Konferenz und die Veröffentlichung des Tagungsbandes war, den Komponisten in den Status eines Superstars erhoben, der seiner bemerkenswerten Rezeption im 16. Jahrhundert durchaus entspricht.Aber Lowinskys weiter reichende Ambitionen, die zum einen auf eine Neuausgabe von Josquins Musik unter seiner Leitung, zum anderen auf die generelle Richtung zielten, die die Forschung zur Musik der Renaissance seiner Meinung nach einschlagen sollte, hatten nicht den gleichen Erfolg. Das Vermächtnis der Juilliard-Konferenz ist mit Lowinskys eigenem Vermächtnis verflochten -sowohl positiv als auch negativ -und zeugt von der beherrschenden Stellung der Renaissance-Musikwissenschaft in den Vereinigten Staaten zu dieser Zeit.
