“…These researchers found that individuals with a strong family orientation consumed alcohol less frequently and reported consuming fewer drinks in a row than did adolescents with a weak family orientation. Additionally, Brook, Whiteman, Gordon, Nomura, and Brook (1986) reported in a longitudinal study of more than 300 high school students that maternal rejection was related to the initiation of alcohol use. In a similar vein, Vicary and Lerner (1986) found in a longitudinal study of 133 young persons (10 through 19 years of age) that maternal rejection was related significantly to children's later initiation of use of alcohol and marijuana.…”
