Lethal Canine Distemper Virus Outbreak in Cynomolgus Monkeys in Japan in 2008

Abstract: In that outbreak, 46 monkeys died from severe pneumonia during a quarantine period. A CDV strain (CYN07-dV) was isolated in Vero cells expressing dog signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM). Phylogenic analysis showed that CYN07-dV was closely related to the recent CDV outbreaks in China, suggesting continuing chains of CDV infection in monkeys. In vitro, CYN07-dV uses macaca SLAM and macaca nectin4 as receptors as efficiently as dog SLAM and dog nectin4, respectively. CYN07-dV showed high virulence in… Show more

“…Post-PPRV eradication, the world's cattle, sheep and goat populations would lack cross-protective immunity to morbillivirus infection. Canine distemper virus (CDV), a virus with an almost global distribution, is capable of causing significant disease in a broad range of hosts, including non-human primates [84,85]. CDV can rapidly adapt to use the human form of the morbillivirus receptor (SLAMF1) in vitro [86], raising concerns about the ease with which these viruses can effectively jump hosts.…”

“…Recently, however, CDV outbreaks have emerged in a variety of mammals, including nonhuman primates, and showed high mortality rates (11,(13)(14)(15). The repeated lethal CDV outbreaks in monkeys in recent years clearly demonstrate that CDV is now a real threat for monkeys (11). Our concern is the potential risk of CDV infection in humans (16), since SLAM and nectin-4 both show high homology in their amino acid sequences between monkeys and humans (11).…”

“…Among the morbilliviruses, the human pathogen measles virus (MeV) is still responsible for over 120,000 fatalities annually (1), whereas canine distemper virus (CDV) causes high mortality and morbidity not only in dogs but also in an ever increasing spectrum of wild aquatic and terrestrial carnivores (2)(3)(4).…”
