Lethal and sublethal effects of chlorantraniliprole on Spodoptera cosmioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: These results indicate that chlorantraniliprole has toxicity against S. cosmioides larvae. Sublethal effects on the biological and reproductive performance of this species can help optimize integrated pest management programs. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…We observed that chlorantraniliprole at low-lethal concentrations could also prolong A. ipsilon larval development (fifth and sixth stages). Previous studies have demonstrated that low doses of chlorantraniliprole could prolong the development time of many lepidopteran insect pests 10,3436 . These results are consistent with those observed with the anthranilic diamide insecticide cyantraniliprole, which also prolonged the larval development of some lepidopteran pests 29,37 .…”

“…Chlorantraniliprole has also been shown to prolong the development times of some lepidopteran insect pests, including; Plutella xylostella, S. littoralis, and Spodoptera cosmioides [65,66,67]. In this study, both insecticides and their nano-forms did not show any significant differences in other biological parameters, including pupal weight, pupation%, and emergence%, except for the LC 50 of nano-thiocyclam, which exhibits a significant difference in pupation% and emergence%.…”

“…The LC 30 and LC 50 of the benzothiazole treatments significantly shortened the larval duration of T. castaneum , which differs from the most common response of insects to insecticides. Generally, two regulation modes of development are adopted by insects in response to insecticide stress, and a prolonged development time is the most frequently reported sublethal effect of insecticides on development . For example, Salpichroa origanifolia and flufenoxuron delay the development time of T. castaneum .…”

“…Under practical conditions, not only lethal but also sublethal effects exist among all insecticides. Insecticides may be photolyzed or hydrolyzed, and insects can move away from concentrated‐insecticide exposure areas, therefore insects live in an environment with sublethal concentrations of insecticides for a longer time than they live under conditions with lethal concentrations . Thus, a comprehensive evaluation of a new insecticide should include both direct toxic effects and sublethal effects.…”
