Lessons Learned From Four Selective Water-Shutoff Treatments in Mature Reservoirs in Maracaibo Lake

Abstract: Some of the most important oil reservoirs located at the Maracaibo Lake Basin are produced by a waterdrive mechanism. After four decades since the beginning of production, oil rates have declined mainly due to a continuous increase in water production. These reservoirs are characterized by highly heterogeneous sandstone formations in which water channeling through high permeability strakes is a very common cause of water production. Another type of problem affecting production in these reserv… Show more

“…demonstrated that swelling particles exhibit good resistance to flow in heterogeneous reservoirs which led to increasing the oil recovery factor. Gel treatment could be a helpful technique for applications in fractures, channels, and high‐permeability regions . Polymeric hydrogels have exclusive properties that make them special materials.…”

“…Gel treatment seems to be a traditionally used and costeffective conformance control technology that can plug high permeability zones, fractures and channels. The application of gel treatments in oilfields has proved to effectively reduce water cut, improve oil production and therefore extend the lives of productive wells [21][22][23][24][25][26]. In situ gel treatment requires that the polymer and the cross-linker are mixed and injected together into the formations.…”
