Lesions of the Renal Pelvis and Proximal Ureter in Various Nephro‐urological Conditions: An Ultrasonographic Study

Abstract: The applicability of ultrasonography was studied in the diagnosis of lesions of the renal pelvis and ureter in 10 dogs. Ultrasonographic findings of processes associated with dilatation and concretion formation in the renal pelvis were described and the differential diagnosis of the lesions was discussed. The authors propose a new classification system for judging processes characterized by dilatation of the renal pelvis. Experience suggests that ultrasonography is an effective procedure in the diagnosis of ce… Show more

“…The sonographic features like hyperechoic medullary rim are suggestive of nephropathy [11] and marked renal pelvic dilation with central anechoic space and atrophy of renal parenchyma following longstanding ureteral obstruction [10, 12] in hydronephrosis have been documented. Hydronephrosis have also been sonographically categorized as narrowed renal parenchyma with its structures still discernible in mild hydronephrosis to more thin homogenous renal parenchyma in advanced hydronephrosis [13]. According to this classification, the dog in the present study was affected with advanced degree of hydronephrosis.…”

“…2,14,23,24,73,85 Mild, unilateral pelvic dilation has been observed with saline diuresis or secondary to increased urine flow when the contralateral kidney was badly diseased or missing. However, current high-resolution ultrasound equipment allows visualization of mild pelvic dilation during diuresis in normal animals (pyelectasia).…”

“…73 If the dilation is more than 3 to 4 mm, diuresis is considered less likely and further investigation is warranted to rule out disease. This kidney is enlarged and there is increased echogenicity of the renal cortex (C) in this cat with renal lymphosarcoma.…”

“…Ureters are not normally identified throughout their entire length on single radiographs because of peristaltic emptying of the radiopaque urine (19). Two-dimensional, gray scale ultrasonography can complement data obtained from other diagnostic modalities, including survey and contrast radiography (7,9,10,13,15). In the diagnosis of renal disease in the dog, ultrasonography has many advantages over conventional radiographic procedures.…”
