The Northwest and Central-West Iberian Peninsula configure an intraplate area far from the active plate boundaries, where the Variscan basement crops out extensively (Iberian Massif). This area of the Iberian Peninsula has been traditionally considered a seismically stable region; however, it presents a moderate intraplate seismicity which indicates the presence of active structures and the occurrence of potentially damaging earthquakes. The scarcity of Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits makes very difficult to track the record of the more recent tectonic activity and the characterization of active tectonic structures within the Iberian Massif. Nevertheless the seismic sequences of 1995-1997 in Lugo (5.1 mb; IV) and 2003 in Zamora (4.2 Mw) provided important information about the orientation of the present stress tensor, and the distribution of the hypocenters informed about the rupture geometry of the fault planes. The present work integrates geological, geomorphological, structural, and seismological data in order to define the main potentially active faults in the region. Faults trending NE-SW to N-S are potentially active as strike-slip, in some cases with a reverse component, under a NW-SE to N-S compression.

“…In NW of the Iberian Peninsula, three main ductile deformation phases have been identified in this part of the Variscan belt (Ribeiro, 1974;Noronha et al, 1979;Ribeiro et al, 1990). The last ductile deformation phase (D 3 ), Namurian-Westphalian in age, is followed by a brittle deformation phase (post-D 3 ), late Carboniferous to Permian in age which is characterised by a set of conjugate strike slip faults (NNW-dextral and NNE-sinistral), pointing to a late-Variscan main compression around N-S (Ribeiro, 1974;Arthaud and Matte, 1975). Multidisciplinary studies integrating, U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock geochemical data, isotope geochemistry, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) studies and gravimetry were carried out on the Vila Pouca de Aguiar and the Águas Frias-Chaves porphyritic biotite granite plutons. Both plutons occur independently in a distance of about 20 km. The Vila Pouca de Aguiar and Águas Frias-Chaves plutons are examples of late to post-orogenic felsic Variscan granites in northern Portugal (NW Iberian Peninsula). The U-Pb zircon analyses yield a consistent age of 299 ± 3 Ma which is considered to be the emplacement age of the two plutons. These granites are weakly peraluminous, show high HREE and Y (and low P) contents which are consistent with them being I-type. This is also supported by their weakly evolved isotopic compositions, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr i = 0.7044-0.7077 and εNd = − 2.0 to − 2.6, as well as by the whole rock oxygen isotope (δ 18 O VSMOW) ranging from + 9.7‰ to + 11.0‰. The emplacement of granite magma took place after the third Variscan deformation phase (D 3 ) in an extensional tectonic regime, large scale uplift and crustal thinning. The integration of different data suggests that both plutons have the same feeding zone aligned within the Penacova-Régua-Verin fault (PRVF) and that both have the same structure which is related to late Variscan phases. The thicker shape for the Águas Frias-Chaves pluton comparing to that of the Vila Pouca de Aguiar pluton is compatible with different depths of PRVF sectors. The available data led us to propose a model of partial melting of a meta-igneous lower crustal source rather than an open-system of mantle-crust interaction. The interaction between the continental crust and invading mafic magmas could have been limited to mere heat transfer and, perhaps, local intermingling.

Contribution of active faults in the intraplate area of Iberia to seismic hazard: The Alentejo-Plasencia Fault

We present the earthquake potential characterisation of the Alentejo-Plasencia Fault (APF) in the intraplate area of the Iberian Peninsula. The APF displays clear deformation of geomorphic surfaces and sediments of Neogene and younger age and, thus, we consider it to be active within the current tectonic regime. APF fault slip rate values range from 0.01 to 0.1 mm/yr with a preferred value of 0.05 mm/yr. Mw associated to fault rupture ranges from 6.6 to 8.7 using different segmentation models (segments ranging from 20 to 500 km) and various fault scaling relationships. Recurrence intervals derived from slip rate and Mw range from 10 ka to 4 Ma, with preferred values between 20 and 30 ka. Other faults in the interior of Iberia present similar values. Hazard curves produced using all fault sources from the intraplate Iberia show that active faults of the intraplate Iberia do not contribute significantly to seismic hazard at short return periods typical of the building codes (~ 500 year return periods). However, they can be important contributors to hazard at critical facilities (high hazard dams, nuclear power plants, emergency response buildings) where return periods of interest may be 10,000 years or more. Our fault source characterisation is very preliminary (with large uncertainties) and further detailed studies of active faults across the whole plate boundary are required to confirm the values for the intraplate faults presented here.Keywords: Alentejo-Plasencia Fault, active fault, intraplate Iberia, hazard assessment, Spain ResumenEn este trabajo se presenta la caracterización del potencial sísmico de la falla Alentejo-Plasencia (APF) situada en la región intraplaca de la Península Ibérica.
