“…The most commonly used ID tools were MosKeyTool Version 2.2 by Günay et al [ 3 ] (72% of responders), the dichotomous key from the publication by Becker et al [ 1 ] (38%), the CD-ROM of Schaffner et al [ 13 ] focusing on the mosquitoes of Europe (32%), the latter often associated with the CD-ROM of Brunhes et al [ 2 ] focusing on the mosquitoes of North Africa, and the keys on the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU) website ( https://www.wrbu.si.edu/vectorspecies/keys : 8%). Many other tools were used at a frequency ≤5%, including internet sources and old scientific literature ( Supplementary file 5 ).…”

“…This indicates that MosKeyTool and other computer-aided illustrated ID tools which have a multi-criteria approach (i.e., non-dichotomous) are appreciated and respond to demand. More surprising is the continued use of CD-ROMs (Brunhes et al [ 2 ], Schaffner et al [ 13 ]) despite the fact that they have been integrated into MosKeyTool. This may be due to the obvious differences in the interfaces of these tools, the CD-ROM being perhaps perceived as more “user-friendly” than MosKeyTool/Xper2™ software.…”

“…Subsequently, several factors have contributed to its adaptation to the urban environment and worldwide invasion, in particular genetic predisposition, drought-resistant eggs, preferences for human blood, and larval development in man-made container habitats [ 85 ]. This species has been reported in the five countries of North Africa [ 17 ]. Despite its complete eradication in 1967 in Egypt [ 56 ], this mosquito re-emerged forty years later, in southern Egypt, in the Aswan [ 86 ] and Toshka localities [ 56 ].…”

“…After the pioneering entomological works realized by the Sergent brothers [ 14 ] and Senevet and Andarelli [ 15 , 16 ], forty-years later, Brunhes et al developed useful software for identifying Culicidae in Mediterranean Africa [ 17 ]. Recently, Robert et al provided an updated distribution chart of the Euro-Mediterranean mosquito species including Algeria, Egypt, Lybia, Morocco and Tunisia [ 18 ].…”

“…For the mosquitoes, the situation of Reghaia provides a suitable habitat for mosquitoes to breed and grow. Brunhes et al (2000) noted that the Culicidian fauna of Algeria includes 48 species. In a previous study on Culicidae biosystematics at four stations in the eastern part of Algiers, Lounaci (2003)…”
