Eco-biological Study of the Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis from Oubeira lake

Abstract: Gambusia was studied in Oubeira lake in spring 2016. A total of 100 specimens were collected in the lake. The sex ratio was F:M = 5.12: 1. The length-weight relationship was estimated for the population, with Wt = 0.0197Lt2.4451. The condition factor was calculated C=1±0.2 (for population) and a significant difference was observed between males and females. For 100 examined stomachs, the diet mainly consists of algae (N=54.96%, Pi= 166%, O=91%), followed by the mosquito larvae (N=21.52%, Pi= 65%, O=49%), detri… Show more

“…Gambusia detected in this study was Gambusia affinis. Gambusia affinis originates from the southeastern coastal region of the United States and has been widely introduced to the world for mosquito control (Chabet et al 2022). According to Wahyudewantoro and Rachmatika (2016), Gambusia affinis is relatively small, approximately 4 cm long, with a slightly curved back.…”

“…A survey conducted at Algerian freshwater sites between 2007 and 2010 collected G. a nis at 7.7% abundance in rivers and lakes (23 out of 39 sites) (Chaibi, et al, 2012), although locations are not speci ed. In 2016, established G. a nis populations were studied in Oubeira lake (Chabet Dis, et al, 2022). Established G. a nis have been con rmed by sampling of multiple specimens at the Gazelle fountain dam in Biskra in 2007, Timimoune's foggara between 2010-11, wadi Sebaine in Tiaret between 2017-2018, and at a small dam in Bechar in 2018 (Sellaoui and Bounaceur, 2020).…”
